Outgoing SPAM Filtering

In an effort to ensure the highest quality ADSL network for our users, we will be implementing Spam and Virus filtering for all outgoing mail from our ADSL Network. This will be done transparently and should not result in any disruption. Q: How does this benefit me? A: We will be able to rapidly isolate and notify any users who have been infected with Spam Bots and Viruses. This will ensure minimum network degradation and allow us to continue to service unaffected customers. Q: Will there be service interruptions during the implementation of this new feature? A: No, the planned change will be transparent to users and will not impact the delivery of normal email. The scan will be performed in real time, any infected email will be instantly blocked and reported. Q: When will the implementation take place? A: We will initially be implementing the filter in the Cape Town area from the 5th of March 2010. Once results have been confirmed the roll-out for the remainder of our network will take place over the following weeks, dates for these to be announced. Q: Will any users be excluded? A: We will evaluate requests for certain SMTP servers to be excluded on a case by case basis. Additional spam filter technical info: Checks SMTP traffic and blocks any viruses found, it will also spam-check messages. E-mail containing viruses or classed as spam are blocked (SMTP-server session is brought down). A 550 error message is sent back to the mail client at time of sending request, stating why the message was blocked. Uses netfilter framework to forward connections to destination MTA. It's transparent, so any SMTP-authentication works and the scan is performed in real time, any blocks will be instantly reported to the mail client.
